The GTA V GeoGuessr guide
GTAGuessr is a free GeoGuessr game on the GTA V map: you are dropped into a 360° view somewhere in Los Santos or Blaine County and have to find the spot on the map. This guide explains the rules, the scoring and the game modes, then gives tips to improve.
How it works
- A game has 5 rounds.
- Each round shows a GTA V location in a 360° view: drag to look around, up and down too.
- Open the map, drop your pin where you think you are, then confirm.
- The game reveals the real location, the distance between you and the points you earned.
- After 5 rounds your total score (25,000 at most) is compared with the leaderboard.
How points are scored
A round is worth up to 5,000 points, only if your pin lands exactly on the location. The score falls exponentially with distance: about 200 m off already costs 350 points, and a few kilometres away only a handful of points are left.
The score is computed by the server, not by your browser, so the leaderboards stay fair.
Game modes
- Classic
- No time limit. After 30 seconds you can buy a hint (the name of the district) for 1,000 points.
- Timed
- 60 seconds per round, with a beep that speeds up as time runs out.
- Hard
- The location is only visible for 3 seconds, then it disappears: you have to remember it before placing your pin.
- Multiplayer
- Create a room, share its 4-character code and play the same places together, at the same time. Round time is adjustable from 30 to 180 seconds, with a built-in chat.
- Daily challenge
- The same 5 places for everyone, day and night mixed, 30 seconds per round and a single attempt per day.
- Weekly challenge
- The same 5 places for everyone until Sunday, with a theme that changes every Monday (night, countryside, city, day and night mixed), one attempt only and its own ranking.
- Zones and time of day
- Play on the whole map, in the city only or in the hills and countryside, and pick day, night or both. Every combination has its own leaderboard.
Tips to guess better
- Read the signs, the road markings and the type of road: a highway, a dirt track and a shopping street are not found in the same places.
- Use the terrain and vegetation: the coast and beaches in the west, the Vinewood hills north of the city, the desert around the Alamo Sea, the forests and Mount Chiliad in the north.
- In the city, learn the look of each district: the Downtown skyscrapers, the Vespucci beach and canals, the port and its warehouses in the south, Los Santos airport.
- Watch where shadows fall and where the sun is to find your bearings; at night, signs and street lighting give the clues.
- Zoom in on the map and use the magnifier before confirming: a few dozen metres can change a lot of points.
- To improve, start with the “City” zone to learn the districts, then move on to the whole map.
Account, leaderboards and badges
You can play without an account. A free account reserves your nickname and keeps your history and badges on all your devices.
There is a leaderboard for every mode, zone and time of day; the classic mode also has a weekly and a monthly one.
Where do the images come from?
The 360° panoramas were captured in GTA V, all over the map: over 600 places, by day and by night, from Vespucci beach to the countryside of Paleto Bay.
